You can try adding this to /etc/modutils/aliases (then running update-modules)
I seem to remember having some trouble with DMA but can't remember for sure. I
assume your BIOS is set to do EPP and/or ECP.

    alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
    options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7 io_hi=0x778 verbose_probing=1

    Hi Tim, Tom and Timothy

    Thank you for your response.

    I did

    - recompile my kernel with CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_FIFO turned on
(in fact, I even upgraded to 2.4.14)
    - I first loaded the parport_pc module with the irq=auto dma=auto options
    - Then I added the lines "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" and "options
parport_pc ..." as suggested in the documentation

    Still, the system only reports:

    parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP(,...)]
    parport1: PC-style at 0x278 [PCSPP(,...)]

I really don't know how to debug (let alone, solve) this problem.

    Regards
