This is *unfortunately* normal.  The parallel port Zip drives are just
plain slow.  You can get better performance with an IDE Zip drive or
even better with a real SCSI Zip drive (with a supported SCSI card).

An Adaptec SlimSCSI PCMCIA card and a true SCSI Zip drive will give you
better performance.
